どのように最小の空間で宇宙の広大さを理解できるのか？有限の空間に無限の感覚を見出すにはどうすればよいのか？宇宙を折り畳むことは可能なのか？
2024年10月16日から11月17日までノグチ美術館で展示される移動的で可変的なインスタレーション*「folding cosmos」は、親密さと無限の相互作用に形を与え、人々が集まり熟考するための静かな空間を提供しています。

このプロジェクトにインスピレーションを与えたのは、19世紀の日本の探検家・松浦武四郎（1818-1888）が作った小さな書斎「一畳敷」の物語でした。遠く離れた友人たちが日本各地の重要な場所で集めた木材で作られたこの小さな空間は、武四郎の社会的ネットワークと、探検家とその友人達にとって意味のある場所を示す一種の地図となり、蓄積された知識と経験がひとつの充実した空間に凝縮されています。

    Miwako Kurashima invites small groups of visitors to join her in the installation to share tea and conversation, on Thursdays at 1 pm and 1:30 pm. Seats can be reserved at The Noguchi Museum front desk on the day of the program.

イサム・ノグチ（1904–1988）は、20 世紀で最も重要な彫刻家の1人です。 この展覧会は、イサム・ノグチ財団と庭園美術館（ニューヨーク）のコレクションを中心に、ノグチの道具と素材の国際的かつハイブリッドな関係性に焦点を当てています。日本人の父と白人のアメリカ人の母の間に生まれたノグチの道具を探求する旅は、茅ヶ崎の母の家を作る際に学んだ日本の大工道具一式から始まりました。パリのコンスタンティン・ブランクーシのアトリエで彼は木工の別のスタイルを学び、ニューヨークの自分のスタジオでは、伝統的なものからハイテクまで様々な材料と加工方法を用い多くの時代の道具を混ぜ合わせました。彼が主に石と紙に取り組んだ日本のアトリエには、光の彫刻「あかり」をはじめ、さまざまな作品とともに道具類がそのままの形で残されています。

2002年にヴィラ九条山レジデントとして京都で過ごした日々は、フィリップ・ワイズベッカー氏にとってかけがえのない日本の原風景のひとつだといいます。2021年に竹中大工道具館で開催された展覧会の一部を、フランスのパリにある氏のアトリエの風景や多様なモティーフとともに紹介します。作家に見出された美しい京都と日本の風景 とかたちを、この特別な機会に楽しんでいただければ幸いです。

【フィリップ・ワイズベッカー】
1942年生まれ。1966年フランス国立高等装飾美術学校（パリ）卒業後、ニューヨークに移住して広告やイラストレーションを手がけ、2006年フランスに帰国しアートワーク製作を本格的に開始する。2002年、アンスティチュ・フランセ日本が運営する京都のアーティスト・イン・レジデンス、ヴィラ九条山に4ヶ月間滞在して制作を行う。
